About Potteric Carr Nature Reserve

About Potteric Carr Nature Reserve

Potteric Carr brings several wetland and woodland habitats together in a nature reserve near Doncaster. Reedbeds, ponds and meadows sit alongside woodland, giving the landscape a mix of open and sheltered settings.

The reserve has recorded more than 230 bird species, 28 butterfly species and 21 dragonfly species. Wildlife-watching hides offer places to pause and observe; birdwatching is a particular draw, with bitterns highlighted in spring and starling murmurations in winter.

The operator describes the reserve as suitable for a visit lasting an hour or half a day. You can keep the visit focused on a walk and a hide, or allow extra time for the visitor centre and café. Potteric Carr can also be paired with an outing at Sandall Park, with its paths and facilities.

Paths and wildlife watching

Paths and wildlife watching

Easy trails pass through woodland and around ponds, with wide, dry paths on some routes. The operator describes some trails as suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, so check route details with the reserve if you need to plan around a particular access requirement.

Build in pauses at the wildlife-watching hides rather than treating the paths only as a way through the reserve. The birdlife varies with the season: bitterns are highlighted in spring, while starling murmurations are a winter feature.

Dogs are not allowed on the reserve. Assistance and guide dogs are welcome.

Access and facilities

Access and facilities

The visitor centre has an accessible entrance and toilet facilities, including baby-changing facilities. Access to the centre and café is free, even though admission to the reserve may be payable.

Admission is free for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust members and visitors aged 18 and under. Adults pay £6; students, disabled visitors, and people receiving Universal Credit or Pension Credit pay £4.50.

A tramper mobility vehicle is available to hire for £8 for a full day or £4.50 for a half-day, usually three hours. The operator recommends booking ahead by calling 01302 325736.

The café serves hot food until 2:30pm and closes at 3:30pm. Snacks, cold drinks and ice creams are available until the reserve closes. Free visitor parking is available, but the car-park gates are locked at 5pm. If you plan to stay later, arrive before 5pm and ask at the visitor-centre welcome desk.
