Start with a Doncaster town-centre visit

Start with a Doncaster town-centre visit

Begin at Doncaster Market on a normal market day, then allow time to browse its different halls and stalls. The market’s usual days are Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, from 8am to 4pm; its buildings are open Monday through Saturday, and some traders choose additional trading times.

The market brings together Goose Hill Market, the Fish Market, the International Food Hall, the Corn Exchange, the Wool Market and an outdoor market. Its International Food Hall has butchers and delis, cafés, a noodle bar, a cheese stall and an olive stall, so you can make lunch part of the visit.

From Beverley Inn rooms near Doncaster, Doncaster Market is about a 12-minute drive.

If you prefer a museum stop, Danum Gallery, Library and Museum sits in the Civic and Cultural Quarter, at the junction of Waterdale and Chequer Road. It brings together lending libraries, a museum, an art gallery, the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Museum and a Rail Heritage Centre, where displays include two locomotive engines, No. 251 and Green Arrow.

For a closer look at the different halls and trading days, the Doncaster Market visitor’s guide can help you choose where to spend your time.

Add a nearby park or attraction

After the town centre, choose an outdoor stop that fits the day. Sandall Park is a local option from Edenthorpe; the hotel is about a 3-minute drive from the park. You can also swap the park for the South Yorkshire Air Museum, which is about a 13-minute drive from the hotel.

For a longer countryside-and-history outing, Cusworth Hall and Park are 2 miles from Doncaster city centre. The Hall was built between 1740 and 1744 for local landowner William Wrightson and now houses Heritage Doncaster’s social history museum. Cusworth Park is open every day of the year, while the Hall opens Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am–4pm.

Bus services 341 and 241A run from Doncaster Interchange towards the Mallard pub or Kempton Park Road; each stop is a 10-minute walk from Cusworth Hall.

The council says the museum has full disabled access, level access to the Hall and much of the park, and disabled parking in the main car park. Sandall Park paths and facilities can help you plan the park part of the day.

Plan food and travel breaks

Plan food and travel breaks

Use the market’s International Food Hall for a convenient lunch stop within the town-centre visit. If you want to break up the day with a separate indoor stop, Danum Gallery, Library and Museum is open Monday to Friday, 10am–5pm, and Saturday, 10am–4pm; it is closed Sunday. Check its opening pattern against your chosen day before setting the order of your stops.

First buses 387, 387A and 388 link Doncaster and Edenthorpe, as well as places including Dunscroft, Hatfield Woodhouse, Stainforth, Thorne and Moorends. For current journey planning, use Travel South Yorkshire’s journey planner or Traveline’s telephone service on 0800 952 0002.

If you would rather make the South Yorkshire Air Museum your main afternoon stop, its setting gives the day a different focus from the market and museum. The South Yorkshire Air Museum visiting guide covers that attraction as a separate outing.

Build the day around the opening pattern of your main stop: choose Tuesday, Friday or Saturday for the normal Doncaster Market, and check Danum Gallery’s weekday or Saturday hours if you plan to visit. The antique and bric-a-brac market is held on Wednesdays, 8am–2pm, which offers a different market-day option.

For a car journey into town, the council lists the Markets car park with 333 spaces, including 28 disabled spaces. Parking there is free from 6pm to 8am and on Sundays and bank holidays. Bus services provide a route between Edenthorpe and Doncaster; check the current journey planner for the service and timing that fit your plans.
